Rite of Christian Initiation

The process that the Catholic Church uses to bring adults into our faith is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults or RCIA. RCIA is a liturgical rite where those wishing to join our faith can inquire about the possibility of becoming Catholic. Then, if the inquirer feels ready to proceed with further study, he or she would be accepted as a catechumen or a candidate (if already baptized in another Christian tradition). During this period of preparation the catechumen or candidate receives the appropriate catechesis, that is, instruction, about the truths of Catholic doctrine and moral life, becomes involved in Sunday liturgy, and studies scripture. While it may appear that a lot of instruction is going on, at this stage a more proper emphasis is on Christian faith formation. As the catechumen or candidate enters the season of Lent, a period of purification and enlightenment begins. This Lenten period is spent in more intense spiritual reflection.

At the Easter Vigil our new members are received into the Church through baptism, if not already baptized, or by a profession of faith in the Catholic Church for those who were already baptized. But the RCIA process doesn’t stop there. Our new members continue to explore and reflect on their new experience of faith in their new community during the six-week Easter season.

None of this happens without the prayers and support of our parish community and the able assistance of RCIA team volunteers. The teams work in a rotating cycle throughout the year and use an instructional program designed for the proper catechesis. Our volunteers are able to guide those interested in our faith through the rite; are able to share their own faith stories; and are willing to listen to the diverse faith stories of those who come to us.

If you have any questions or are interested in exploring becoming a Catholic, please contact the parish office and someone who can assist you in this exploration will contact you.

Secular Franciscans

Secular Franciscans become members of a fraternity, a living and active Christian community, in which they find support and encouragement from fellow Franciscan brothers and sisters. Monthly fraternity meetings with common prayer, instruction and fellowship provide the spiritual nourishment needed to live as a Christian in the world. Meetings are held on the fourth Friday of the month at 7:00pm in the Parish Center Room #1. For information, please call the Parish Office.
